All systems produced by Zuccato Energy are based on the\u00a0organic Rankine cycle<\/b>, a high-efficiency thermodynamic cycle that takes its name from its inventor, the Scottish physicist\u00a0W.J.Macquorn Rankine<\/b>\u00a0(1820-1872), one of the fathers of thermodynamics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Working Principle<\/h2>\n

The Rankine cycle – and in particular the\u00a0organic<\/i>\u00a0Rankine cycle, has characteristics that make it ideal for heat recovery and the exploitation of low-temperature heat sources in general. Its working principle is simple, but it is better explained through a schematic (see above):<\/p>\n

Heat<\/b>\u00a0(Qin<\/sub><\/span>) is conveyed to an\u00a0heat exchanger<\/b>\u00a0(2<\/span>) called\u00a0evaporator<\/i>, increasing the temperature of a\u00a0working fluid<\/b>\u00a0circulating into it. In the original Rankine cycle this working fluid was just water going into steam, but in the\u00a0organic<\/i>\u00a0Rankine cycle, it is instead an organic fluid with a boiling point far below that of water – which in Zuccato Energy plants is also\u00a0non- toxic, non-flammable and ozone-friendly<\/b>.
\nThis fluid, when exposed to heat, expands into a\u00a0high pressure dry gas<\/b>\u00a0(3<\/span>) that spins a\u00a0turbine<\/b>\u00a0generating mechanical energy (Wturbine<\/sub><\/span>).In our plants, this energy is converted into electricity by a direct-drive generator mounted on the turbine impeller shaft, and the electricity is then output to the grid or used in place.<\/p>\n

On exiting the turbine the working fluid – now in gas form – is then conveyed to a second\u00a0heat exchanger<\/b>\u00a0(4<\/span>), called\u00a0condenser<\/i>, where it sheds its excess heat condensing back into a liquid. The liquid working fluid is then pumped back into the evaporator heat exchanger by a specific pump (1<\/span>), thus completing the closed ORC loop.<\/p>\n

Excess heat<\/b>\u00a0released in the condenser (Qout<\/sub><\/span>) is in itself an\u00a0exploitable thermal resource<\/b>\u00a0which can be used directly, e.g. to\u00a0preheat fuel<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0dessiccate biomass<\/b>\u00a0about to be burned, thus reducing its water content and increasing its energy value. In purpose-designed systems (e.g. our CHP-series modules), excess heat temperature is high enough for combined heat and power generation (aka\u00a0cogeneration<\/b>) or for combined heat, power, and cold generation (aka\u00a0trigeneration<\/b>) with the use of heat absorbers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
